New Business Opportunities for TCUGB Instructors

The Way of Energy
and the Future of Sport

Hi. I'm Jayne Storey. A T'ai Chi instructor with 20 years experience, recently appointed Executive Committee Member of TCUGB and Director of Training at Chi-Power™ Sports, a company dedicated to developing sports coaching and enhancing athletic performance through the use of the Eastern energy arts, including Chi Kung and T'ai Chi.

Core StabilityMy role on the TCUGB Executive Committee coincides with my role within Chi-Power™ Sports and that is to have T'ai Chi Instructors recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), so that qualified TCUGB Instructor classes will be positioned alongside such things as 'Body Balance' and 'Chi-Ball' classes at local sports centres - classes which profess to include elements of T'ai Chi but which clearly do not. The objection REPs has to including T'ai Chi instructors within its remit, along with Pilates and Yoga teachers, is that T'ai Chi is not an exercise or sport but a martial art. Well, that may be so, but T'ai Chi is also a health art and to this end, my own classes at David Lloyd Leisure are now divided into T'ai Chi Health and T'ai Chi Combat respectively, to show that the art can be taught from either perspective, but only through a qualified instructor.

Hopefully, having T'ai Chi instructors included in the Register of Exercises Professionals will open up more teaching opportunities to TCUGB Instructors at sports and leisure centres across the UK.

Another development that TCUGB Instructors may find interesting comes from within the sports world itself, with many top level sports psychologists and mental game coaches hailing the Eastern energy arts as "the missing link" in sports coaching.

My own company, Chi-Power™ Sports is on the cutting edge of this new sports movement, which has been gathering pace for the past few decades.

GolfFrom Michael Murphy's classic book "Golf in the Kingdom" to Dan Millman's "Warrior Athlete" and the "Inner Game" concept of Timothy Gallwey, the interest in the Eastern energy arts amongst athletes looking to generate effortless power and mental mastery is now unprecedented.

As a committed sports-woman myself - I train in Triathlon and Golf as well as Chi Kung, T'ai Chi and Zhan Zhuang - I know that by combining running, golf, cycling, swimming, tennis, boxing, weight-training, snow-boarding - indeed any sporting activity with training in traditional Eastern practises such as Chi Kung, Meditation or T'ai Chi, will enhance athletic potential in a variety of ways.

For instance, training in the Eastern energy arts can increase an athlete's ability to release effortless power, improve their efficiency and economy of motion, develop their mental intent (winner's mind-set), create a more stable core region and enhance relaxation of their "bodymind". They will also learn how to generate ground-strength (peng) in order to use gravitational force in the golf swing, tennis serve, 100m sprint, dive, half-pipe routine etc and learn to move from their body's natural fulcrum or centre of gravity (t'an tien), thus developing unity of motion and increasing their natural force.

RunningChi-Power™ Sports training has been tried and tested at the highest levels, including Juniour Olympics, Elite-Masters and PGA Tour Players. The opportunity is now open for TCUGB Instructors who have at least 5 years teaching experience and who are committed to a particular sport - for instance, you're a keen runner, golfer, footballer, cyclist etc and you'd like to open up your T'ai Chi teaching career to include local, national, elite and masters-level athletes in your client base.

To this end, I will be running a one day Workshop for any and all TCUGB Instructors who are interested in exploring this opportunity and who wish to be part of the paradigm shift which is taking place in sports-training across the globe.
