permalink Tai Chi for Health - released

Tai Chi for HealthThe new book - Tai Chi for Health - written by TCUGB member Master Liming Yue and Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei was officially released at the International Tai Chi Festival and the third International Exchange Competition opening ceremony in China in August 2005. It is now available to purchase online at http://www.shop.taichicentre.com.
This full colour book focuses on the health benefits of Tai Chi, concentrating on the official Chen Style 18 Short Form, Silk Reeling Energy and Qigong exercises. The book contains detailed illustrated instructions and in-depth discussion of the theories behind the practice. The text offers an unprecedented insight into the techniques and theory of Chen Style Tai Chi. The authors bring together their vast knowledge, teaching experience and cultural understanding to create a work that is accessible to western students whilst keeping all the important detail often lost in translations. You can see samples of the book or download the PDF version of the book at: http://www.chenzhenglei.taichicentre.com

permalink Tai Chi Scam, Instructors Beware
Quite a few instructors have had this email:
Quincy Williamswrote:
My name is Williams, i lived at Powerscroft Road, Hackney. I have a son who is interested in learning Tai Chi, So i mail to confirm if you can teach my son .
I will like you to tell me your qualifications and how many years you have been teaching Tai Chi.
Moreso, i will like you to tell me how much it will cost me for 6 months (1hr a day and 5 times a week) and your phone number for easy communications and your Mailing Address where the payment will be send to.. As i'm ready to make all neccessary payment as soon as possibe.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
Quincy Williams.
NB: He is a Beginner..
This is a scam. The idea is you forward a price to them, they send a cheque which will normally be more than you asked for, e.g. cost = £3000.00, cheque equals £5000.00. Immediately they say "not a problem, bank the cheque, just send us a cheque for the difference". Eventually their cheque bounces, and you are £2000.00 out of pocket. This is also a form of money laundering.
thanks to Antony Court and David Hackett for the heads up.

permalink Yuen Feng Shu information sought
The TCUGB got this request for help, if you have any information send it to me and I'll pass it along. (John Johnston)I am after some help! I got this link of Master Wang Haijun website.
I am currently learning and teaching a Martial Art style called "Yuen Feng Shu" (Combined Soft Arts) in UK.
I am trying to trace the history of this style, sadly my Instructor died in april 2001. His Instructor possibly a Rob Gilston from Cumbria went to China with some Chinese families through "The Chinese Cultural Society" do you have any info on this as well?
A Chinese family who were involved was mentioned to me one person called Richard Ling plus other Ling family members who were living and still may live in Newcastle (this would of been 60's or 70's) and up and down the Chinese Communities (Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, possibly even Manchester. Other Chinese families were also involved Lee's, Chan, etc.
Any help would be great as this style and my Instructor means a lot to me, and I told him I would find the other people involved. Would you please ask around the Chinese community. There were also some Martial Art demonstration pictures on a Chinatown website I found.
I was also told these Ling's and Lee's families did Martial Art and Weapons demonstrations up and down the country.

permalink West Yorkshire Teachers self facilitating workshops
John Rowland is organising an interesting series of workshops, he tells us:It is looking likely that some self facilitating workshops will get off the ground here in West Yorkshire. They would be during the day and suitable mainly for teachers who want to push hands, exchange ideas and exchange experiences, skills, etc. with others. People of all styles would be welcome. It would provide a space where people who mainly teach beginners could extend themselves and hone long-neglected skills.
The first get-together will be on Thursday, the 21st April at 10.30 am.

permalink Brian Cookman
Brian Cookman one our long-standing members passed away on Friday 18th February 2005 at Addenbrooks Hospital in Cambridge, at the age of 59.Brian emailed me early January after returning from holiday in South Africa. During his holiday he became aware of some pains and following a scan discovered he has cancerous growths. Despite this harsh news he remained (at least of the surface) in very good spirits and asked friends and fellow taiji players to meditate to help him through his difficult times.
In the early days of the Union’s magazine Brian helped me out with professional layout advice and was always on hand when I needed to learn some new software. On a few occasions he happened to be in Glasgow on business and we met now and again for a few drinks and a chat. At the last Tai Chi Caledonia he was delighted to be invited to teach at the weekend and by all accounts his work was very well received by all who attended his courses. Brian also contributed much to the Tai Chi Health Forum. Despite my Scottish roots I had a great affection for Brian’s qualities which to me, in a true sense, carried the very essence of a English gentleman. In all my dealings with Brian he was friendly, helpful with never a bad word to say for anyone. His passing is sad loss to the internal arts community.

Secretary.
permalink Proposed ban of swords in Scotland
Eva Koskuba tells us more about the Proposed ban of swords in Scotland:I think Ronnie has already written on behalf of TCUGB to oppose the above bill. But I thought you might be personally interested in this petition against the proposed bill to ban the sale and use of swords in Scotland.

There's an article about it here, and lots more on the web if you search under 'Scottish sword ban'

Martial arts and re-enactment groups will be badly affected if this bill goes through, and many people think it will pave the way for similar legislation in England. If you agree, please feel free pass it on to others who might be interested.
