permalink T'ai-Chi & Meditation Retreat on Holy Island

Union Instructor Sue Weston sent some photos and a wee report of the T'ai-Chi & Meditation Retreat on Holy Island, West Scotland this August.

We were practising Chinese Medical Qigong on the shore of Holy Island overlooking the bay to the Isle of Arran. We had a wonderful week on this unspoilt Island. And we were very spoilt: there was a vegetarian cooking course happening at the same time
as my course, so the food, always, good, was magnificent! And the cooking complemented the Medical Qigong we were practicing. A truly holistic and healthy week.

permalink Putting the Quan back in Taiji

Joanna Zorya has another DVD out!
This one is a double and costs £35. Interested parties can contact Joanna through the website: http://www.reelingsilk.co.uk
Here's the blurb off the back cover:
For the complete beginner
This series is designed to be a complete resource that you can learn from with solo forms and fighting techniques presented side-by-side, helping you to develop a full understanding of Taijiquan movement. Martial applications should be practiced from the beginning of your studies, informing your solo practice just as much as solo practice will improve your martial abilites.

For the experienced student
Are you martially mindful and alert in your practice? Could you use your art to protect yourself or someone else? Regardless of how many forms you may have learned, if you do not know how to deal with an attacker you have not yet even begun your study of Taiji. Martial artists must understand the movements they are practicing in order to perform them correctly. Empty (uninformed) form practice very often proves to be detrimental to your skill.

For the teacher
Ask many Taiji students to demonstrate (say) "a roll-back" and they will be unable to do so without going through the whole of “Grasping the Bird's Tail.” Very few Taiji practitioners would be able to demonstrate the technique at full speed against an oncoming punch. The blame lies squarely in the hands of the many Taiji teachers who do not even attempt to learn or teach martial skills in any kind of realistic way.

permalink Voluntary placement

Paddy Screech asked the union for help, he writes:
I am the Co-Ordinator of a drug treatment service in Woolwich in south-east London, and we are looking for someone who would be interested in offering us a weekly Tai Chi session for a small group of our clients. We run groups exploring emotions, relapse-prevention,physical issues about drug-use and offer counseeling and a range of complementary therapies, but feel that some form of body-work enabling our clients to explore disciplined movement and meditative practice would be an invaluable addition to the care package we offer.

Unfortunately we have no core funding that would enable us to reimburse the practitioner - though we would of course pay for travel expenses. If anyone - perhaps practitioners in training who are looking for environments in which to undertake placements - they would me most welcome to contact me on 020 8316 0116.
Thanks so much for your help.

permalink Linda Chase - Extended Family

Carcanet Press tell us they are publishing union founder member Linda Chase's new book of poems, Extended Family, in May.

Extended Family is a sensual celebration of the varied relationships that make up lives richly lived: from the subtle, intimate interactions of close family members and lovers, to the mutual rewards and stresses of relationships with friends, therapists, students and housemates.
The book begins in America, with childhood memories and adolescent love. In the second section, 'Younger Men Have Birthdays Too', a love affair unravels in a sequence of tender, angry love poems. In the final section, relationships encompass casual interactions and the close understandings of friends, loving kindness and the chaos of mental breakdown. Linda Chase's wit and sharp eye for telling detail make this a collection in which, with a wry eye, the poet can express heartbreak, and the narratives of the everyday reveal unique moments of insight.

permalink Gerda Geddes – 2006

Union Secretary Ronnie Robinson Writes:
The first person who ever studied and taught Tai Chi in the UK passed away on Saturday night, 4th March 2006.

Gerda began training in Shanghai in 1949 at a time when very few women of any nationality was able to study the art. For nearly 60 years Tai Chi played an integral part in her life and she remained actively interested and open in her heart and mind right to the end.

I first met Gerda about four years ago when, much to my surprise she undertook a round trip of over 150 miles to attend a workshop I was running. Initially I was curious to her reasons for attending but any concerns were quickly displaced when she discretely moved to the back of the class and carried on the work with her fellow students.

Over lunch we had a very pleasant chat and I decided that this fascinating woman would be more than worthy of interviewing. At a later date, when visiting my family in Aberdeen, I arranged to call on Gerda to conduct the interview. As I had my family with me on the trip we arrived en masse to her little cottage in the Grampians. Gerda was extremely hospitable and welcoming and made my partner and children relaxed and comfortable before we adjourned to another room.

The interview subsequently appeared in the UK Tai Chi Chuan & Internal Arts, The Taijiquan & Qigong Journal (Germany) and my own Scottish Alternative Health magazine, Connections.

I was pleased when a number of people contacted me to say they enjoyed the interview and highly delighted when Gerda first telephoned and she wrote a letter expressing her thanks for the piece. Since these early meetings we have had contact from time to time and I was pleased when she visited us twice at Tai Chi Caledonia. Whenever she spoke she was clear, lucid and inspiring for all. Above all Gerda had one quality in abundance that sadly is becoming rare these days – dignity.

We last met late 2005 when I was working in the Aberdeen area and she came to join me for lunch at a local eatery. Her company was, as ever, both interesting and charming and a pleasure to be close to. On the short walk back to workshop venue she took my arm and told me that her time was coming soon and that was okay as she was prepared for it. I’m sure she was.

In an art where often respect is asked I have found very few individuals who deserve the honour and respect that Gerda did. She was a classy lady in the true sense of the term and her early steps in the world of tai chi will continue to walk through the feet of many.

I intend to run a feature of Gerda in future publications and welcome comments, experiences from anyone who worked with this Grande Dame of Taijiquan.

permalink Move and Be Moved

Union member Linda Chase Broda let us know of an interesting workshop she is running:

What attributes do tai chi and poetry have in common? To name a few--- form, structure, sensitivity, and a striving toward essence. The workshop will include movement sessions based on Tai Chi and Chi Kung that will allow participants to focus on their own physical process. Also, there will be some set writing exercises based on the movement sessions, some of which will be developed in pairs.

This workshop invites you to move and be moved. The aim is to explore writing potential in ways which concentrate the mind and body and deepen awareness of images, thoughts and feelings. Movement and life are inseparable. Conscious movement can fuel expression in surprising ways.

You may be a poet, an experienced tai chi player, or indeed a novice in both these arts- whichever, you are welcome. Please wear loose comfortable clothes and bring soft slippers if you prefer not to work in bare feet.
