Captcha on Events

Sunday 25 November 2007 at 1:11 pm One of the main sections of the union site is the Tai Chi Events page. Instructors are encouraged to send in events using the Add an Event page. Unfortunately spammers have been using the form to post links. These links have been clogging up my inbox.
to try and combat this I've added a captcha to the event forms which looks like this:

A captcha is a test to see if the form is being submitted by a human. It is easy to fill in and in this case uses a service reCAPTCHA which will not only stop spammers but do a bit of good.
I've also updated the form so that once you fill in one event, it will keep the details so that you will not have to change them if you post another event.
The system seems to be working well, but if you use the form and don't get a reply from me in few days, please email me and let me know.

Tai chi on Target

Tuesday 20 November 2007 at 6:16 pm Dawn to dusk Tai Chi marathon at Exeter Steiner School

Left to right are David Perry, Tom Haworth and Nicky Love
On 28th October TCUGB Instructor Joe Salmon and student Tom Haworth undertook an 11 hour sponsored tai chi session to raise money for Exeter Steiner School. They started before dawn and finished after dark, braving the weather to practice outside if possible or in the schools amazingly decorated hall.
They practiced, taught and demonstrated all day and were joined through the day by twenty five members of the community including people learning tai chi from scratch, experienced practioners, local teachers including Matthew Rochford, Andrew Broadhead and David Perry and general well wishers and food bringers. They have so far collected £800 which will go towards improving facilities at the schools new site and employing a much needed classroom assistant.

This incredible little place receives no funding from the government and needs your help to continue providing a style of education that truly embraces all aspects of the development of each individual child.

Goldie Webb at the 19th British open

Sunday 13 May 2007 at 8:08 pm

Goldie Web with Fan

Union Instructor Faye Yip wrote to tell us of one of her student's successes at the Open:
One of my students, Goldie Webb attended the 19th British open and won three gold and one bronze and was awarded the best female competitor of the day. She was so excited and felt she was so honoured to have won such a prestigious award, she wrote a short article about her experience in the competition.

The 19th British Open Tai Chi Championships
Goldie Webb is a student member of Deyin Taijiquan Institute(GB) under the teaching of Master Faye (Li) Yip and her Kung Fu Brother Alan in Warrington . She has been training very hard and decided to try to enter a competition representing the Deyin Institute. And guess what, she won three gold medals and one bronze! Well Done, Goldie!

On 1 April 2007 I traveled to the Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre in Oxford to take part in the 19th British Open Tai Chi Championships 2007. This was the first time I had ever considered entering a competition of this stature but, encouraged by Tary and Faye, I decided to give it a go!

Although I had trained hard for my events, and had been helped greatly by my instructors Prof Li and Alan McDonnell of Wigan and with advice from Tary and Faye, I was still quite frightened when I arrived at the venue. I didn’t know anybody else there, but the organiser, Dan Docherty, helped me feel at ease, and I resolved to do my best, not least because I wanted to do my instructors justice after all the help they had given me.

I entered five events in the championships, at both the “Intermediate” and “Open” levels, and was successful in four events, winning three Gold medals and one Bronze medal! I was over the moon, and felt like the luckiest person in the world! I think the event I enjoyed the most was the 52 kung fu fan form.

The championships were really exciting, and I learnt a lot by watching the other competitors’ routines. I also met lots of really nice people – Tai Chi is a great sport for making friends!

To round off a great day, I was also awarded a special prize for best female competitor, winning a fantastic sword. I’ll have to get practising with it for next year!

19th BRITISH OPEN TAI CHI CHAMPIONSHIPS & FESTIVAL OF CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

Friday 27 April 2007 at 06:58 am A special attraction in Oxford this year was the visit and demonstrations of members of a Chinese delegation from Zhengzhou led by Mr. Li Wei, Secretary General of the Zhengzhou Wushu Association, who were the guests of the Tai Chi Union. Master Liu Yiming demonstrated a set of Chang's Boxing from Henan Province, which uses much Tai Chi theory though it is different posturally. Master Liu also demonstrated the rare Bagua Ji Zhua Axe form. Madam Li Fei also gave elegant performances of the rarely seen Bajiquan and Tongbeiquan.

Our Chinese friends after discussion with Tai Chi Union Chairman, Gary Wragg, awarded quality swords to the outstanding female, male and junior competitors. These were newcomer Goldie Webb, veteran tuishou competitor Michael Abosch and Joanna Ji who narrowly edged out her younger brother Johnny.

There were competitors from France, Denmark and our annual visitors from Belgium led by Geert Van Loo. The highlight of the full contact was a 3 man team challenge, a Chinese Boxing team from France against a team from Great Britain and Ireland, which our French friends won; Tai Chi man, Declan Gannon from Dublin, being our only winner. Thanks to all who came for making the day a success.

BTCC Championships

Friday 06 April 2007 at 6:10 pm

Chris from the tai ji circle sent us the first news of the 19th British Tai Chi Championships:
Six students from the Tai Ji Circle, based in London’s Camden, led by its director Shifu Quan Jun Liu, entered the 19th British Tai Chi Championships at the Blackbird Leisure Centre in Oxford, on 1 April. This was the second competition that our students have entered and they competed in several catagories, the Open Mens Tai Chi Hand Forms, Tai Chi Sword Forms and in the Beginners and Intermediate Hand Forms.

It was an exciting day with dazzling Wushu, (martial arts), demonstrations from the TCUGB’s (Tai Chi Union of Great Britain) visiting Chinese delegation from Zhengzhou, and lots of competitors demonstrating every style of tai chi, including the Chen Style. Congratulations to our students who overcame their nerves to compete and performed well despite heavy competition.

Paul Lockyer came 1st in the Open Tai Chi Mens Forms, winning a gold medal for the 56 Part Chen Competition Form, Martine Niven won gold for the 42 Part Sword Competition Form, in the Tai Chi Sword Forms , and Justin Schlosberg won Bronze in the Beginners category. Justin has only been training in the Chen Style with the Tai Ji Circle for just a year.

The students have been receiving early morning coaching from Shifu Liu and working very hard to achievethese great results.

hopefully we will have the rest of the results soon.

Sword Ban petition

Sunday 25 March 2007 at 09:49 am Union Instructor Dan McGiff emailed a link to an online petition against The proposed ban on the import, sale and manufacture of swords:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Reconsider an outright ban on swords.
The proposed ban on the import, sale and manufacture of swords will have an adverse effect on legitimate practitioners, collectors and manufacturers. Actual sword related crime is very rare and does not warrant a ban that affects the cultural activities of thousands of legitimate martial artists, collectors and smiths. Current legislation is quite adequate to deal with violent crime connected with bladed weapons. New legislation is merely for show. Enforcing such a ban will also affect cultural events such as Scottish Sword Dancing and many Sikh festivals. We urge the PM to reconsider this knee jerk reaction to media influenced scaremongering.
Petition the Prime Minister to Reconsider an outright ban on swords.

Update David Radford of Tai Chi finder sent me this information:
Scotland
A proposed ban on sword sales to be put before the Scottish Parliament in the Autumn with exemptions swords for Highland dancing, museum displays, historical re-enactments, fencing and martial arts.
Commercial sellers will have to comply with strict new licensing conditions, including keeping records of all sales.
see BBC NEWS | Scotland | Glasgow and West | Swords ban to beat violent crime

The situation in the UK generally:
The Home Office may ban sale, import and hire of replica samurai swords by the end of the year.

Union Shop

Sunday 07 January 2007 at 06:57 am The shop on the site has be updated with quite a few new items. The Union Promotions & Publicity Officer Ronnie Robinson explains:

The Tai Chi Union website is for many the main point of contact when looking for information about tai chi and teachers in the UK. In order to increase our service, both to the general public, and to our members, we have launched an online shopping presence which will also generate some increased revenue for the Union.

Initially we have included a limited range of products and, depending on its success we will add more items in due course. Priority for material will be given to TCUGB instructor members who have books, DVDs or products related to our arts. If you have something that you feel should be included please contact Ronnie Robinson who will send you a copy of our terms and conditions.

Tai Chi notes

Wednesday 03 January 2007 at 08:28 am Union Instructor Ralph Jones wrote to tell us of his move to Taiwan. After updating his entry on the site I checked out his website http://www.realtaichi.com/ where he is blogging his visit. Ralph told me:
My intention in China and Taiwan is to visit as many Internal Martial Arts masters as I can and hopefully befriend some of them and carry
out some interviews etc later on. We plan to be here for 3 to 5 years, so should be able to compile a lot of material.
As well as blogging his Tai Chi note Ralph is also blogging at Ilha Formosan Life subtitled An opportunity to record some of our experiences as my wife and I attempt to settle in Asia
