About Us

The Tai Chi Union for Great Britain was formed in 1991 by 9 instructors: Nigel Sutton, Gary Wragg, Ian Cameron, Linda Broda, John Hine, Ray Wilkie, Paul Crompton, Trevor Barry and Dan Docherty.  In 2018 it became a Community Interest Company (CIC) which is owned by the members and managed by the Board of Directors with all the day to day work done by the Support Team.  We welcome ALL styles of Tai Chi and Internal Arts and all levels of interest from the simply curious wishing to understand more to expert teachers.

We are a not-for-profit organisation.  This means that surplus income over expenses must be re-invested to fulfil the aims and objectives of the Company and cannot be distributed to the members.  We are run by members for members with only one part-time, paid member of staff ; everyone else (including the Board) works as unpaid volunteers.

The principle aim of the Union is to

provide benefit to the general population of Great Britain by promoting the benefits of practicing Tai Chi Chuan as a Martial Art and Health regime for people of all ages and abilities”

In summary, we fulfill these aims by providing the following:

  • Members get benefits such as a printed magazine three times a year, regular newsletters, help with funding, insurance deals etc.
    • Instructor Members have an advantage over other teachers because they can show they have been assessed by a reputable organisation
  • For the public, we provide
    • Reliable, unbiased information on all styles of Tai Chi and Internal Arts
    • Details of Instructors and classes they can trust to be of a good standard
    • Information to the media promoting the benefits of Tai Chi and Internal Arts for health and well being

The company has many detailed Objectives about how we will support both our members and the public and these can be found in the Articles of Association.
